Can You Continue Driving When the EPS Light Is On?

You should not continue driving when the EPS light is on, as it indicates a fault in the Electric Power Steering system. The function of EPS is to assist the driver in steering by using the power generated by an electric motor, which directly provides steering assistance. This eliminates the need for components such as the hydraulic power steering pump, hoses, hydraulic fluid, drive belt, and engine-mounted pulley, thereby saving energy and protecting the environment. The working principle of EPS is: when the steering wheel is operated, the torque sensor mounted on the steering column continuously measures torque and angle signals. These signals, along with the vehicle speed, are input into the Electronic Control Unit (ECU). After calculation and processing by the ECU, it controls the motor to output the corresponding magnitude and direction of torque. The motor's assist torque is then transmitted through a reducer to increase torque and is applied to the steering system, achieving the vehicle's power steering effect.
