Can You Change a Spare Tire on the Highway Emergency Lane?

You can change a spare tire on the highway emergency lane, but certain conditions must be met, and you must park according to regulations. For example, if a tire suddenly bursts on the highway, you must turn on the hazard lights, move the vehicle to the emergency lane promptly, and place a triangular warning sign behind the car. The warning sign should be positioned 150 meters behind the vehicle to better alert other drivers that there is a breakdown and to keep their distance. Without this clear marker, approaching vehicles may not have enough time to avoid your car, increasing the risk of accidents. Here are the situations in which the emergency lane can be used: Passengers in the vehicle experiencing sudden illness, a woman in labor, or students rushing to exams can occupy the emergency lane in emergencies. When a vehicle experiences sudden malfunctions that prevent normal operation—such as a flat tire, engine failure, transmission issues, brake failure, steering loss, accidents, or fire and explosion hazards—meaning the vehicle cannot continue driving or poses a threat to passenger safety, it can stop on the emergency lane. Penalties for illegally using the emergency lane: Article 82, Clause 4 of the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" states: Motor vehicles driving on highways must not engage in the following behaviors: driving or parking on the emergency lane without an emergency. According to Article 90 of the "Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China," illegally driving on the highway emergency lane without an emergency will result in a 6-point penalty on the driver's license. Precautions for using the emergency lane: Park the vehicle within the emergency stopping area and turn on the hazard warning lights. All passengers must move to a safe area and, if necessary, call the highway emergency number for assistance. Place a warning sign 150 meters behind the vehicle. During nighttime, rain, or fog, also turn on the side marker lights, taillights, and rear fog lights. In cases of traffic congestion ahead, parking or queuing in the emergency stopping area is prohibited.
