Can Transmission Fluid Replace Brake Fluid?

Transmission fluid cannot replace brake fluid as they serve completely different purposes. Brake fluid is specifically designed for automotive hydraulic braking systems. The signs indicating the need for transmission fluid replacement include: vehicle body vibration, gear shifting jerks; transmission overheating warning appearing on the dashboard; engine stalling; and unusual noises. The methods for replacing transmission fluid are as follows: Unscrew the drain plug at the bottom of the transmission to drain the old fluid before refilling. Directly remove the transmission oil pan for draining and refilling: This method is more thorough than the previous one, as it allows removal of impurities accumulated at the bottom of the oil pan. Using a circulation machine to replace automatic transmission fluid: Dynamic fluid replacement with an intelligent circulation machine can filter and clean sludge and impurities inside the automatic transmission. Hazards of prolonged failure to replace transmission fluid: 1. Damage to the transmission's gear shift control mechanism; 2. Abnormal wear of gears and clutch plates inside the transmission; 3. Impaired normal operation of the transmission, leading to damage of the transmission valve body.
Transmission fluid must never be used as a substitute for brake fluid. From my own car repair experience, these two are worlds apart. Transmission fluid is designed to lubricate and cool the gears in the transmission, such as ATF or similar types, with high viscosity to keep the transmission running smoothly. Brake fluid, on the other hand, is critical for the hydraulic system, featuring an ultra-high boiling point like DOT 3 or 4 standards, specifically transferring pedal pressure to the wheels with minimal moisture absorption to prevent boiling under high temperatures. If transmission fluid is used as a substitute, its insufficient viscosity can create bubbles in the brake pump, leading to spongy or even failed brakes. How dangerous is that? Sudden brake failure on the highway can cause major accidents. I’ve seen some beginners mistakenly mix them up, resulting in costly repairs and the need to replace the entire braking system. Remember, regularly check the brake fluid level and only top up with the brand-specified type—never cut corners for convenience.
