Can the USB port in a BMW 3 Series be used for charging?

It can be used for charging, but the user manual does not recommend using the car's USB port to charge mobile phones. Charging in the car is slow: Some cars come with built-in USB ports, but the direct output current of these USB ports is generally very low, approximately only half that of a standard charger. This is similar to plugging a phone into a computer's USB port for charging, resulting in a much slower charging speed compared to normal home charging or using a cigarette lighter charger. Charging in the car will not damage the phone: Mobile phones also have an internal IC chip that manages charging current and voltage to prevent damage from unstable voltage and current conditions.
The BMW 3 Series can definitely charge via USB. I've been using the black USB port in the center armrest of my 325Li (owned for over two years) daily with an Apple cable to charge my phone. The speed is quite stable, though slower than home fast-chargers. Once when my phone had only 5% battery, it charged to 40% during a 30-minute drive home—perfect for emergencies. The newer 3 Series models even have Type-C ports under the center console; my friend's 330i charges Android devices faster there. Tip: Avoid running too many car electronics while charging, especially seat heaters, as occasional power drops may occur. For long trips, carrying a power bank is recommended for backup.
