Can the Toyota Levin Hybrid Get a Green License Plate?

Toyota Levin Hybrid cannot get a green license plate. The Levin Hybrid is a gasoline-electric hybrid, so it does not qualify for a green license plate. Currently, only three types of vehicles can be registered with green license plates: pure electric vehicles, range-extended electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrid vehicles. The engine of a gasoline-electric hybrid vehicle still uses fuel as the primary power source. Only series hybrid passenger vehicles with external charging capability are eligible to apply for green license plates, and gasoline-electric hybrid vehicles do not meet this condition. Eligibility criteria for new energy license plates: 1. Registered in China with sufficient self-owned capital and financing capability matching the project investment; 2. The applying company can only produce pure electric passenger vehicles, including pure electric and range-extended (series hybrid passenger vehicles with external charging capability) vehicles that meet relevant national standards.
I've just researched the new energy vehicle license plate policies. Currently, there are mainly two types of green plates in China: pure electric vehicles starting with D and plug-in hybrids starting with F. The Toyota Levin's regular hybrid (non-plug-in version) cannot get a green plate because it's essentially still engine-driven with a small battery capacity that can't be charged. However, Levin does have a plug-in hybrid version with a pure electric range exceeding 55 km, which qualifies for green plates in most cities. It's worth noting that Shanghai has tightened policies for plug-in hybrids since 2023, requiring stricter pure electric range and technical standards. Before purchasing, it's best to check the latest regulations with your local DMV or directly ask the 4S store sales for a policy document.
