Can the heater be turned on without starting the engine?

You cannot turn on the heater without starting the engine. If you turn on the heater when the car is not running, it will cause the battery to discharge without being charged, which can damage the battery. Additionally, turning on the heater when the engine is off can burn out the wiring supplying the heater due to the lack of current. However, if the car breaks down, you can turn on the heater for about ten minutes to warm up the interior before turning it off, which will not significantly affect the vehicle. The correct way to use the heater: 1. Do not press the AC button; 2. Do not turn on the heater immediately after starting the car—wait until the coolant temperature rises; 3. Remember to turn off the heater when parking for an extended period.
I usually drive to and from work, and often encounter situations where I want to warm up in cold weather. Without starting the engine, it's absolutely impossible to turn on the heater. This is because the car's heating system relies entirely on the heat generated by the engine to warm up the coolant, which is then blown into the cabin by the fan. Without starting the engine, the fan can still operate but only blows cold air, and it also unnecessarily drains the battery. If the battery is depleted, the car won't start. Once, I tried to save time by turning on the fan without starting the engine, and ended up with a dead battery, requiring a rescue vehicle and causing delays. Now, I only turn on the heater after starting the engine and waiting for the coolant temperature to rise—this is both safe and efficient. Additionally, checking the car's condition: some new cars may have auxiliary electric heating functions as exceptions, but most traditional vehicles must have the engine running. Developing this habit can also extend the battery's lifespan and avoid unnecessary troubles.
