You can start the car without releasing the handbrake, but you cannot drive the car. The functions of the handbrake: When parking, pulling up the handbrake keeps the vehicle stationary and prevents it from rolling downhill; while driving, pulling up the handbrake during a turn can create a drifting effect; in emergencies, the handbrake can be used as a brake. Consequences of driving without releasing the handbrake: It accelerates the wear of the brake discs and causes the brake pads to harden due to overheating, reducing braking performance; it leads to excessive wear of the handbrake's brake pads, damaging the drive shaft; it locks the rear wheels, snaps the cables, and may result in skidding or rollover.
