Can the BMW 5 Series sunroof be fully opened?

The BMW 5 Series sunroof cannot be fully opened. The panoramic sunroof is segmented, with the front section being operable but not fully openable. Method to open the sunroof: When pressing the sunroof switch, the front and rear sunshades will open automatically. Pressing the switch again will fully open the rear sunroof section. Advantages of the sunroof: Due to its large area, it better maintains fresh air circulation inside the vehicle compared to regular cars, quickly eliminating odors; provides an excellent view of the sky; more effectively reduces cabin noise during high-speed driving compared to side windows; and can rapidly lower interior temperature, making it particularly effective for cooling down sun-exposed vehicles.
I've been driving my BMW 5 Series for almost two years now, and the panoramic sunroof is truly impressive. However, it doesn’t fully open to the top; it can only slide open partially or tilt at an angle. For example, on the highway, I often slide it open just a crack to let in fresh air without causing disturbance—minimal wind resistance and low noise. In terms of design, BMW prioritizes safety: preventing objects from flying out or increasing risks during accidents. I’ve driven a friend’s Audi before, where the sunroof could open wider, but the 5 Series’ partial opening is actually more practical—great interior lighting and hassle-free. For maintenance, keep the tracks clean; accumulated dust can cause jamming over time. I wipe them monthly with a soft cloth, and it runs much smoother. Operation is simple—just push the button inside the car, and the system automatically remembers the position, a thoughtful design indeed.
