Can the Avalon Hybrid Get a Green License Plate?

The Avalon Hybrid cannot obtain a green license plate. Taking the 2019 Avalon Hybrid as an example, it is a mid-size car with the following dimensions: length 4975mm, width 1850mm, height 1450mm, wheelbase 2870mm, fuel tank capacity 49L, and curb weight 1706kg. The 2019 Avalon Hybrid features a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear E-type multi-link independent suspension. It is equipped with a 2.5L naturally aspirated engine producing a maximum horsepower of 178PS, maximum torque of 221Nm, and maximum power of 160kW, paired with an E-CVT continuously variable transmission.
I've been eyeing this car for a long time. The Avalon Hybrid is Toyota's hybrid electric vehicle with quite advanced technology, but it belongs to the HEV category and cannot be charged via plug-in. Its pure electric mode driving range is very short, estimated at just a few kilometers. In China, green license plates are issued for pure electric, plug-in hybrid, or fuel cell vehicles because these can travel sufficiently long distances on electric power alone, with policy requirements mandating at least 50 kilometers or more. The Avalon Hybrid has a small battery that mainly relies on the engine for charging, which doesn't meet the new energy vehicle standards. Therefore, you can't get a green license plate with this car. Although it has low fuel consumption and runs quietly, not qualifying for a green plate means you'll have to queue in restricted zones without enjoying parking benefits. This is something to weigh when buying the car. If your goal is the benefits of a green license plate, you'll need to consider other plug-in hybrid models. Overall, the Avalon itself handles stably, offers spacious interiors, and is suitable for daily commuting—it's just at a disadvantage policy-wise.
