Can Points Deduction Be Automatically Cleared?

Points deducted from a driver's license will not be automatically cleared. There will be consequences after points are deducted from a driver's license. If the points do not reach 12: Article 24 of the "Regulations for the Implementation of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" states that if a motor vehicle driver's accumulated points within a scoring period do not reach 12 and the imposed fines have been paid, the points will be cleared. However, if the fines have not been paid even though the points do not reach 12, the points will be carried over to the next scoring period. If the points reach 12: If a motor vehicle driver's accumulated points reach 12 or more twice within a scoring period, in addition to the measures stipulated in Article 23, such as the detention of the driver's license, mandatory participation in learning sessions, and taking exams, the driver must also undergo a driving skills test. If the test is passed, the points will be cleared, and the driver's license will be returned. If the test is failed, the driver must continue participating in learning sessions and retake the exam.
I've been driving for ten years and have a general understanding of the demerit point system: in most places, demerit points are automatically cleared, but there's a time limit—typically at the end of each scoring cycle, usually after 12 months. As long as there are no new violations before the clearance, the system will reset for you. However, if the accumulated points reach the maximum, such as 12 points, they won’t be easily cleared—you’ll need to attend a study session and pass a test to regain your eligibility. Checking your points regularly via an app is a good habit; it can also remind you of the remaining time in the cycle, saving you from unnecessary worry over minor mistakes on the road. The clearance is automatic, but only if you follow the rules and don’t add new violations—otherwise, the trouble gets worse. Remember to settle fines promptly, as delays can affect the clearance process.
