Non-local vehicles are normally not allowed to use the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge. To balance traffic flow on the river-crossing channels, the Nanjing Traffic Management Bureau has implemented a new management plan, which prohibits medium-sized buses, small passenger vehicles, and special-purpose vehicles with non-local license plates from using the bridge 24/7. This measure is expected to reduce daily traffic on the bridge by approximately 8,000 vehicles. Exceptions will be made for special-duty vehicles and emergencies such as transporting critically ill patients. The bridge's existing four traffic restrictions remain in effect, including a 24/7 ban on non-local trucks and long-distance transit buses, as well as a prohibition on local trucks, semi-trailers, and tractor-trailers from 7:00 AM to 10:00 PM daily.

Previously, my relative drove to Nanjing for a visit and unknowingly violated the rules by crossing the Yangtze River Bridge, resulting in a 3-point deduction and a 100-yuan fine from the electronic police. Now, vehicles with out-of-town license plates are prohibited from crossing the bridge 24/7, regardless of holidays. You can detour via the Second or Third Yangtze River Bridge, or if using navigation, it will recommend taking the Yangtze River Tunnel or Dinghuai Gate Tunnel. Alternatively, you could simply take Metro Line 3 to cross the river. The bridge is too congested, so I suggest friends from out of town take the high-speed train directly to Nanjing for more convenience.

I frequently pass through Nanjing on long-distance delivery runs and learned the rules the hard way after two mishaps. Never attempt to cross the Yangtze River Bridge with an out-of-town license plate – last year, news reported a Shandong-licensed truck getting continuously photographed for forcing its way through. Now I always detour in advance when crossing the river: from Jiangbei to downtown, I take the Second Bridge via G36 Ningluo Expressway; for Jiangning direction, I choose between the Third Bridge or the newly opened Fifth Bridge. Though it adds 15 extra kilometers, it's better than paying fines. Remember to update your navigation maps before entering Nanjing – the road prohibition signs are quite conspicuous.

The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge prohibits non-local vehicles from passing through 24/7. Vehicles without Su A license plates will be automatically captured by electronic surveillance upon entry. This regulation has been in effect since 2016, primarily to control traffic flow and protect the bridge. Each violation incurs a penalty of 3 demerit points plus a 100 yuan fine. Currently, except for special vehicles such as police cars and fire trucks, all other non-local vehicles must detour via the Second Bridge or Third Bridge, or take the Yingtian Avenue and Dinghuai Gate tunnels. Subway Line 3 and S3 Line are more convenient alternative options.
