Can National V Vehicles Still Be Purchased?

In regions where the National VI emission standards have not yet been implemented, National V vehicles can still be purchased. After July 1, 2019, in areas where the National VI standards have been implemented, National V vehicles will not be eligible for registration. If you wish to purchase a National V vehicle, you need to determine based on the local real-time policies. National V vehicles refer to those that comply with the National Fifth Stage Motor Vehicle Pollutant Emission Standards, i.e., vehicles meeting the National V emission standards. Compared to the National IV standards, the sulfur content in National V standard gasoline is reduced by 80%. For vehicles of the same displacement, the sulfur dioxide emissions from five National V vehicles are equivalent to those from one National IV vehicle. For diesel vehicles, the upgrade from National III directly to National V results in a 97% reduction in sulfur content.
From an environmental perspective, you can still buy a China 5 vehicle, but think twice. Given the current severe air pollution, after the implementation of the China 6 standard, China 5 vehicles have higher emissions, and purchasing them might contribute to environmental degradation. Major cities like Beijing and Shanghai have already started restricting China 5 vehicles, and policies will become stricter in the future, making it difficult to drive into city centers. If you're buying a new car, China 6 is definitely the better choice—it's more environmentally friendly and holds its value better in the long run. However, if you're really short on money and buying a used car, China 5 vehicles are more than half the price, so you might get a bargain for temporary use. Just keep in mind they might be phased out within a decade. In short, prioritize environmental responsibility—don’t sacrifice too much just to save money.
