Can I Take the Subject One Exam Without an ID Card?

You can take the exam without an ID card. If you don't have an ID card, you can apply for a temporary ID card, which has the same validity as a formal ID card. The admission ticket and other documents are handled by the driving school, which will distribute them during the exam. Electronic ID cards cannot be used for the exam. The "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driving Licenses" clearly stipulate that the Subject One exam can be taken twice on the same day. If you fail the first attempt, you can retake it for free the second time. If you fail the second attempt, the Subject One exam will be terminated, and you can only reschedule the exam after ten days. The Subject One exam consists of 100 questions, divided into single-choice questions and true/false questions, with each question worth 1 point and a total score of 100 points. If you answer 11 questions incorrectly during the exam, the system will automatically submit the test and end the exam. The Subject One exam is computer-based and lasts 45 minutes. The content of the Subject One exam includes: regulations on driving licenses and motor vehicle management; road traffic conditions and rules; road traffic safety violations and penalties; regulations on road traffic accident handling; basic knowledge of motor vehicles; local regulations; knowledge of braking systems and safety devices for large and medium-sized passenger and freight vehicles; specialized knowledge for wheeled self-propelled machinery, trams, and trolleybuses. Notes for the Subject One exam: Candidates should pay attention to their attire and are not allowed to wear slippers. Electronic devices and bags are not allowed in the exam room. Bring your ID card and queue up to enter the waiting hall. Observe the notes and procedures on the large screen and store personal belongings in a locker before entering the exam room. After entering the exam room, the identity verification station will assign a seat. Once seated, begin the exam. Ensure the camera is aligned with you and follow exam discipline. If you fail the first attempt, you can retake it the same day. If you fail again, you will need to pay to reschedule the exam. After the exam, queue up to collect your score sheet and sign it. A score sheet without a signature is considered invalid. There is no limit to the number of times you can reschedule the Subject One exam. Each subject can be taken once, and if you fail, you can retake it once. If you do not attend the retake or fail the retake, the exam will be terminated, and you must reschedule the exam. For Subject Two and Subject Three, there are only five exam attempts. Subject Two and Subject Three exams can be rescheduled after ten days. If you fail the Subject Three safe and civilized driving knowledge test, the previously passed road driving skills test results remain valid. There are three subjects in the driving test: Subject One, Subject Two, and Subject Three. Subject One refers to the road traffic safety laws, regulations, and related knowledge test; Subject Two refers to the field driving skills test; Subject Three is divided into two parts: road driving skills and safe and civilized driving knowledge test. The safe and civilized driving knowledge test is conducted after Subject Three, so it is commonly referred to as Subject Four. However, in official terms (i.e., the Ministry of Public Security Order No. 123), there is no such term as Subject Four. The exam lasts 45 minutes.
On the day I went to take the first subject of the driving test, I was in such a hurry that I forgot to bring my ID card. When I arrived at the test center, the staff stopped me and said I had to present the original document to take the exam. They explained this was for security verification to prevent cheating like impersonation. I had no choice but to go home to get it, but I missed the exam time and had to reschedule. This experience taught me a lesson: always check your belongings before an exam and keep your ID card in an easily accessible bag. The driving instructor also reminded me that for important occasions like this, it's good practice to prepare in advance. In fact, although the first subject of the driving test is a theoretical exam, the identity verification is strict—don’t expect to use other documents as substitutes unless you’ve reported special circumstances beforehand. In short, safety first—don’t create unnecessary trouble for yourself.
