C1 Subject 2 failing 4 times cannot be switched to C2 test, and the test content cannot be changed at will during the test; but after failing 5 times, you need to retake the Subject 1 test, at which time you can switch to the C2 test. The C1 test subjects include four items: traffic regulations and related knowledge, field driving, road driving, and safe and civilized driving knowledge. C1 driver's license test passing standards: Traffic regulations and related knowledge (Subject 1) - written test, full score is 100, 90 or above is passing. Field driving (Subject 2) - on-site, actual vehicle. The minimum requirement is 80 points, less than 80 points is failing. Road driving (Subject 3) - highway or simulated site, actual vehicle. Full score is 100, must reach 90 or above to pass. Safe and civilized driving knowledge - written test, questions are mainly in the form of cases, pictures, animations, etc., question types are judgment, single choice and multiple choice, a total of 50 questions, full score is 100, 90 is passing.
Of course you can switch. In all my years of teaching driving, I've seen many students who failed the manual transmission test multiple times switch to automatic. The manual test is more complex—for example, poor clutch control can easily cause you to fail the second part. Automatic transmission removes manual gear shifting, making hill starts and reverse parking much simpler, so the pass rate is naturally higher. Check with your local DMV for the specific process; you might need to re-register for the C2 test, but overall, the transition is smooth. Remember to adjust your mindset—automatic transmissions are more common in modern cars, offering safety and convenience, so don't get stuck on manual. Once you pass, you'll drive just as steadily on the road.
