Can I retake Subject 4 on the spot?

No. You need to wait at least 10 days. For each failed subject test, there must be an interval of at least 10 days before you can schedule the next retake. Subject 4, also known as the Subject 4 theory test or driver theory test, is part of the motor vehicle driver's license examination. After the implementation of the Ministry of Public Security's Order No. 123, the Subject 3 test was divided into two parts: in addition to the road test, a safe and civilized driving test was added, commonly known as "Subject 4," which assesses "driving ethics." Since this test is conducted after Subject 3, it is commonly referred to as the Subject 4 test. However, there is no official term "Subject 4" in the actual regulations.
Last time I went to take the Subject 4 test, I was super nervous. I failed immediately when I handed in the paper because my score wasn't enough. I wanted to ask the examiner for an on-the-spot retake, but they said no, I had to schedule a new appointment. Many test centers operate this way now. For example, at my test location in Beijing, I had to wait three days before registering for a retake. Other places might have different rules—I heard that in Shanghai, some centers allow retakes the same afternoon, but it's generally not recommended. Rushing to retake often leads to making mistakes again. I think it's better to review properly. Before the test, I used the Driving Test App to practice questions multiple times to understand the details of traffic rules. Before my second attempt, I focused on practicing sign recognition questions and passed in one go. This approach is more practical—don't rush to retake. Thorough preparation and safety come first.
