Can I Possess Both a Motorcycle License and a Driver's License Simultaneously?

Motorcycle licenses and driver's licenses can be held simultaneously. If you have a motorcycle license before obtaining a driver's license, you need to submit the motorcycle license before taking the driver's license test, which will then be merged into a single document—essentially one unified license. However, if you already possess a driver's license and later apply for a motorcycle license, you must follow the standard motorcycle license application procedure, resulting in two separate licenses. Requirements for Obtaining a Motorcycle License: According to Article 15 of the "Regulations on the Application and Use of Motor Vehicle Driver's Licenses" issued by the Ministry of Public Security of the People's Republic of China: If you already hold a motor vehicle driver's license and wish to add a permitted vehicle category, you must not have accumulated 12 penalty points in the current scoring cycle or the most recent scoring cycle prior to your application. In other words, you must wait at least one year after obtaining your motor vehicle driver's license, during which you have not accumulated 12 penalty points, before you can apply to add a motorcycle license. Examination Requirements: After passing the written test (Subject 1), you must complete the practical driving tests (Subjects 2 and 3) within three years. If you fail to pass within this period, your previous test results will become invalid, and you will need to re-register for Subject 1. Under the new regulations, you are given five attempts each for Subjects 2 and 3. If you fail to pass within these five attempts, you must retake Subject 1.
As a seasoned commuter who drives to work every day, I've always found city traffic jams incredibly frustrating. Last year, on a friend's recommendation, I decided to learn how to ride a motorcycle. Initially, I was worried that getting a motorcycle license might affect my car driver's license, but after some research, I found out it's completely fine. I went to a driving school for consultation, where the staff explained that the process of adding a motorcycle endorsement is straightforward: first, apply at the vehicle management office, wait until you've had your car license for a year, then take the motorcycle theory and road tests. After passing, the D-class endorsement is directly added to your driver's license. Now, getting around is much more flexible—I drive on rainy days and ride my motorcycle on sunny ones, saving on parking fees and fuel costs. Safety is a bigger concern, though: wearing a helmet and not running red lights when riding, and avoiding speeding when driving. Overall, having both licenses has made life more convenient. The only issue is remembering which vehicle to use and not parking the motorcycle like a car. The cost of adding the endorsement was just a few hundred yuan, which is quite reasonable. I highly recommend it to fellow commuters tired of traffic jams.
