Can China V Emission Standard Vehicles Be Upgraded to China VI?

China V emission standard vehicles cannot be upgraded to China VI. Most China VI emission standard vehicles currently on the market have upgraded their three-way catalytic converters to meet the China VI emission standards. Therefore, in theory, China V vehicles could become China VI standard vehicles only by upgrading the three-way catalytic converter. However, in reality, this is not feasible. To change the exhaust emission specifications, it would be necessary to upgrade components such as the three-way catalytic converter and the engine's ECU logic, but individuals cannot do this—only manufacturers can. Moreover, the state does not recognize such upgrades, as only automakers have the authority to perform them. All components of the engine are optimally matched during original manufacturing. If parts are replaced arbitrarily, issues may arise. Even if the three-way catalytic converter could be upgraded, the vehicle's records at the DMV cannot be altered and will remain as originally registered. Therefore, although theoretically, China V emission standard vehicles could be upgraded to China VI, in practice, it is not possible.
To be honest, having worked in repair shops for many years, I've seen quite a few people asking whether China V vehicles can be upgraded to China VI standards. I think it's basically impossible. The differences between China V and China VI standards are significant - the internal engine hardware and exhaust systems are completely different. China VI requires more efficient catalysts and sensors to reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. The upgrade process is troublesome, requiring replacement of the entire after-treatment device and possibly modifying the electronic control unit. The whole set could cost tens of thousands with no guarantee of success. Moreover, manufacturers finalize designs during production, and government certification only considers factory parameters - modifications won't be recognized. I suggest car owners not bother with this. The money saved could be put towards directly purchasing a new China VI compliant vehicle, which would be both environmentally friendly and hassle-free. Currently, China V vehicles still have resale value in the used car market, but prices are dropping steadily, and policy changes might impose driving restrictions.
