Can Car Generators Be Repaired?

Car generators cannot be repaired. The function of a car generator is to supply power to all electrical equipment except the starter while the engine is running normally, and to charge the battery at the same time. Maintenance of car generators includes: 1. Clean accumulated dirt and dust on the generator's surface; 2. Check and adjust the tension of the drive belt; 3. Check whether the wiring between the generator and the regulator is securely connected. The steps for replacing a car generator are: 1. Disconnect the battery cables; 2. Locate the alternator; 3. Unscrew the bolts and loosen the belt that secures the generator; 4. Remove the alternator, unplug and remove all nuts connecting the electrical components; 5. Install the new generator by reversing the process.
When it comes to alternator repairs, it really depends on the specific situation. I recently repaired the alternator on my old car—it turned out the internal voltage regulator was faulty. After opening it up and replacing the part, the issue was resolved, costing just over 300 yuan. However, the mechanic mentioned that if the alternator's rotor bearings seize or the coils burn out, the repair cost would be much higher, almost half the price of a new alternator. Nowadays, many repair shops find it troublesome and directly recommend replacement, especially since removing and reinstalling an alternator is time-consuming. If you notice the battery warning light on your dashboard or dim headlights at idle, I suggest first checking the alternator's output before deciding on a repair plan. Also, don’t forget to regularly clean dust and debris around the alternator, as this can extend its lifespan.
