Can Audi Use Semi-Synthetic Engine Oil?

Audi can use semi-synthetic engine oil, but if you want to extend the engine's lifespan, it is better to use fully synthetic engine oil. Semi-synthetic engine oil: Semi-synthetic engine oil is between mineral oil and fully synthetic engine oil. It contains a large amount of anti-corrosion additives to improve the stability and oxidation resistance of the oil. Fully synthetic engine oil: Fully synthetic engine oil is the highest quality and most durable type of engine oil. Generally, it can last for 10,000-12,000 kilometers in passenger cars without deteriorating. Mineral oil: Mineral oil is the residue left after refining gasoline and heavy oil from petroleum. It is a natural oil with more impurities. Compared to semi-synthetic and fully synthetic engine oils, it is cheaper but has poorer lubrication performance and a shorter service life for the engine.
When I drove an older Audi A4, I tried using semi-synthetic oil mainly to save some money, since full synthetic is significantly more expensive than semi-synthetic. But after a few months, I started noticing issues, especially during winter starts when the engine sounded a bit noisy, and acceleration wasn’t as smooth. Most Audi engines are turbocharged, like mine, which requires high-viscosity full synthetic oil for proper lubrication. Semi-synthetic might only be suitable for some older models or low-intensity daily commuting. It’s best to check the owner’s manual for specific oil specifications, such as VW 502 or 504 standards. Don’t risk damaging the engine to save money—repairs would be far more troublesome.
