Can a Used Car Be Transferred Along with Its License Plate?

Used cars cannot be transferred along with their license plates, as license plates are not transferable. When vehicle ownership is transferred, the license plate will be revoked. If the driver has owned the vehicle for more than three years, the license plate can be retained for six months when the vehicle ownership is transferred. In cases where the registered ownership of a motor vehicle is transferred, the current driver of the vehicle must apply for a transfer registration at the local vehicle management office within 30 days from the date of vehicle delivery. Legal Basis: Article 52 of the "Regulations on the Registration of Motor Vehicles" states that after completing the transfer or cancellation registration of a motor vehicle, the original owner may apply to the vehicle management office to use the original license plate number when registering a newly purchased motor vehicle. The application to use the original license plate number must meet the following conditions: The application must be submitted within six months after completing the transfer or cancellation registration; the original owner must have owned the vehicle for more than three years; and all traffic violations and accident liabilities related to the original vehicle must be resolved.
