Can a new energy vehicle be started while charging?

New energy vehicles can be started while charging, but cannot be shifted into gear for driving. When starting the vehicle during charging, the air conditioning can still be used normally. However, since electric air conditioning has high power consumption, using it while charging will reduce the charging power and prolong the charging time. If the discharge power exceeds the charging power, it may lead to battery depletion and potential internal damage, which would shorten the battery's service life. Electric vehicles have two batteries: the power battery and the starter battery. The starter battery mainly provides power for electronic devices other than high-power components like the motor and air conditioning, such as headlights, central control, wipers, door locks, horns, and brakes. The starter battery also has capacity limitations, and if power is continuously consumed without replenishment, the battery may be drained.
I've been driving a new energy vehicle for several years and have personally experienced this issue. You can definitely start the vehicle's systems while charging, such as pressing the start button to turn on the air conditioning, audio system, or lights. These electronic devices operate normally, and the dashboard will display some information. However, you cannot attempt to drive the vehicle, as it has built-in protection mechanisms that automatically lock the drivetrain to prevent risks like short circuits or overloads during charging. It's similar to how I often pass the time at fast-charging stations by turning on the heater for comfort. But be cautious: frequent startups should be avoided, as prolonged use in this manner may slightly impact battery life due to significant voltage fluctuations and potential system overheating during charging. Beginners are advised to read the manual thoroughly, as it details the limitations under different charging modes.
