Can a leaking steering gear be repaired?

Steering gear leakage can be repaired, but most repair shops generally recommend direct replacement. This is because the steering gear has a precise structure and requires very accurate debugging on a professional test bench after assembly before it can be used. Most repair shops, including 4S stores, do not possess the necessary technology or testing conditions for this. Classification and application of steering gears: Automotive steering gears can be divided into four types: mechanical power-assisted, mechanical hydraulic power-assisted, electro-hydraulic power-assisted, and electric power-assisted. Mechanical hydraulic power-assisted and electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering gears are commonly used in passenger cars. These two types of steering gears have similar structures and working principles, differing mainly in the establishment and control of system oil pressure. Mechanical hydraulic power-assisted steering gears use the engine to drive the steering pump, while electro-hydraulic power-assisted steering gears use an electric motor to drive the steering pump, allowing for more flexible control of system pressure and flow. Precautions for using steering gears: During use, the clearance in the steering gear will gradually increase. If the left and right free play of the steering wheel exceeds 15 degrees, the steering gear must be inspected. If the gear and rack show severe abnormal wear, the entire steering gear assembly must be replaced. If there is no abnormal wear but the clearance is too large, it can be adjusted. Adjustments should be performed by trained professionals at service stations. After adjustment, ensure that the steering wheel can turn to the left and right limit positions with even force and smooth rotation. Regularly check the condition of the protective covers on both sides of the steering gear and the protective cover connecting the upper part of the steering gear to the universal cross joint. Damaged protective covers are the primary cause of early wear and damage to the steering gear.
The issue of power steering fluid leakage is completely repairable! With over a decade of driving experience, I've encountered numerous similar cases, mostly caused by seal aging or loose steering gear components leading to oil seepage. The repair process isn't complicated: First, have a professional mechanic inspect it. For minor leaks, simply replacing the oil seal will suffice – it's inexpensive and quick. If the leakage is severe, the entire steering gear assembly might need repair or replacement. Never ignore this issue, as fluid loss can cause power steering failure, which is extremely dangerous during high-speed turns. I recommend regularly checking the power steering fluid level and topping it up when low, but ultimately, you'll need to visit a repair shop for a permanent solution to prevent greater losses. Paying attention to the steering system during routine maintenance can help prevent this problem from occurring.
