Can a China VI vehicle use SN grade oil?

China VI vehicles can use SN grade engine oil. Applicable engine oils: Castrol 5W-30 can be used as the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) oil for luxury brands such as BMW, Audi, and Jaguar. Advantages of SN grade engine oil: The addition of certain metal elements in the oil can improve its low-temperature resistance and anti-corrosion properties, while also reducing direct contact between metal surfaces, thereby minimizing frictional wear. This grade is suitable for most luxury cars, mid-to-large-sized vehicles, SUVs, turbocharged models, and high-performance sports cars. Currently, Shell oils emphasize fuel economy and environmental protection, Castrol focuses on low-temperature performance and corrosion resistance, while Mobil prioritizes anti-wear properties.
I've been driving for over a decade and know a thing or two about engine oil. The engines in China VI emission standard vehicles are quite particular about oil requirements. API SN grade oil was actually designed for older vehicle models and has relatively high ash content. While using it in China VI vehicles might not show immediate problems, prolonged use can easily clog the particulate filter, leading to reduced vehicle power, increased fuel consumption, and even damage to the aftertreatment system. I've seen too many cases where users tried to save money by using SN oil, only to have the warning light come on within months, costing thousands to repair each time. I strongly recommend switching to API SP grade oil immediately - it has lower ash content and provides better protection for modern emission control devices. Always check your owner's manual for recommended specifications before each maintenance service. Don't risk major trouble to save small money - this is basic car maintenance knowledge.
