Are Power Steering Fluid and Brake Fluid Interchangeable?
1 Answers
Power steering fluid and brake fluid are not interchangeable. Although they share similarities as hydraulic transmission fluids, their functions differ. Brake fluid, also known as hydraulic brake fluid, serves as the liquid medium in a vehicle's hydraulic braking system to transmit braking pressure. Power steering fluid, alternatively referred to as steering fluid or steering oil, is the hydraulic fluid used in the steering system. Power steering fluid has higher viscosity, poorer fluidity, a distinct odor, and possesses certain corrosive properties. Brake fluid cannot be replaced by any other type of oil, as different fluids have different compositions and naturally cannot achieve the original effect of brake fluid. Substituting with other fluids would not only significantly reduce braking performance but could also potentially lead to complete brake failure.
