Are Mud Tires Suitable for Snow?

Mud tires are not suitable for snow as they can affect driving safety and stability. If your area experiences heavy snowfall during winter, it is recommended to use winter tires. Mud tires, commonly known as MT tires, have stronger sidewalls, more exaggerated tread blocks, and significantly larger gaps between tread blocks, which facilitate slow mud expulsion or high-speed mud slinging in muddy conditions. Additionally, they provide better traction on rough terrains such as uneven rocks. Tires are circular elastic rubber products mounted on metal rims, designed to support the vehicle body, absorb external shocks, maintain contact with the road surface, and ensure optimal driving performance.
I used to drive an SUV frequently for off-roading. Mud tires grip very well in muddy terrain but perform terribly on snow. The deep tread patterns of mud tires are great for expelling mud and water, but on snowy surfaces, the rubber is too hard, and the tread can't grip the slippery ice and snow, making it prone to skidding and losing control. I recommend switching to dedicated snow tires during the winter season—it's hassle-free and also helps extend the lifespan of your tires.
