Motorcycles are allowed on highways in Jilin Province. Requirements for highway access: Some provinces permit motorcycles on highways while others do not. Jilin is one of the provinces that allows motorcycles on highways, but the minimum speed must not be lower than 70 km/h. 2020 New Regulations for Motorcycles: Article 78, Section 5 of the "Implementation Regulations of the Road Traffic Safety Law of the People's Republic of China" (hereinafter referred to as the Implementation Regulations of the Road Traffic Safety Law) stipulates: Highways shall indicate the speed limits for each lane, with the maximum speed not exceeding 120 km/h and the minimum speed not less than 60 km/h. On highways, the maximum speed for small passenger vehicles shall not exceed 120 km/h, other motor vehicles shall not exceed 100 km/h, and motorcycles shall not exceed 80 km/h. (According to this regulation, motorcycles are only allowed to travel in the outermost lane of the highway).
I'm a native of Jilin and have been driving all my life. When it comes to motorcycles on highways, I must emphasize: it's not allowed! Just like most places in China, Jilin Province prohibits motorcycles on highways—it's clearly written in the traffic laws. Why is this regulation in place? Primarily for safety reasons. Highways have fast speeds and heavy traffic, while motorcycles offer minimal protection. If an accident happens, the consequences could be disastrous. When I was young and loved speeding, I once tried to enter the Jilin-Tumen Highway, only to be stopped by traffic police immediately—I got a ticket and a long lecture. My advice to fellow riders: don’t take the risk. Ordinary roads are just fine. Jilin’s national and provincial highways are well-maintained and offer beautiful scenery—safe riding is what truly matters. Regular motorcycle maintenance, like checking brakes and tires, is far more important than trying to get on a highway. The rules are there for everyone’s safety, so we should follow them. Otherwise, points deductions and fines just aren’t worth it.
