Are Lubricating Oil and Engine Oil the Same?
1 Answers
Lubricating oil and engine oil are not the same. Engine oil is a type of lubricating oil, but lubricating oil is not necessarily engine oil. For example, grease is also a lubricating oil, but it is not engine oil. Lubricating oil is a liquid or semi-solid lubricant used in various types of automobiles and mechanical equipment to reduce friction and protect machinery and processed parts. It generally consists of base oil and additives. Engine oil, motor oil, or engine lubricant is a substance enhanced with additives in base oil, primarily containing anti-wear additives, detergents, dispersants, and multi-grade oil viscosity index improvers. The main functions of engine oil are to reduce friction and wear on moving parts and to remove sludge (one of the functions of dispersants) and varnish (detergents) from the engine.
