April 11, 2025 – Tesla has begun deploying Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software version 14.3.9, which includes a new active safety capability that can automatically steer the vehicle to avoid a collision even when the driver is not using the FSD system. The feature, announced early Friday by Tesla’s AI team, marks a significant expansion of the system’s role from an optional driver-assist to a potentially mandatory intervention layer during manual driving.

According to the company, v14.3.9 is “starting to roll out shortly” and introduces what it calls “a new active safety feature set.” FSD Supervised “can now activate on your behalf when an imminent collision is detected and Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) may not be enough.” While standard AEB applies brakes only, the new feature gives FSD the ability to take directional control—steering the car around an obstacle when braking alone is insufficient.

Tesla added that the system “may also engage if we detect you’re heavily distracted or have accidentally disengaged FSD.” This means the intervention can be triggered in two scenarios: when an impending collision cannot be avoided by braking alone, and when the driver appears to be inattentive or has inadvertently turned off FSD. In the latter case, the system essentially re-engages on its own to prevent a potential crash.

The feature represents a shift in how Tesla’s software operates. Until now, FSD Supervised was only active when the driver explicitly enabled it. The underlying v14 software stack, which Tesla has been rolling out since April, now runs in the background during manual driving, ready to intervene. This creates a safety net that the company believes will reduce accidents, but it also raises new questions about driver authority and system reliability.
