Mitsubishi has officially expanded the Eclipse Cross EV lineup, introducing a new all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant that promises to boost the model’s appeal in the increasingly competitive compact electric SUV segment. The announcement, made on March 10, 2025, comes as the Japanese automaker accelerates its electrification strategy to meet stricter emissions targets and shifting consumer preferences.

The new Eclipse Cross EV AWD builds on the front-wheel-drive version launched in late 2024. It adds a second electric motor on the rear axle, enabling true AWD capability. According to Mitsubishi, the dual-motor configuration delivers 302 horsepower combined—an increase of 67 hp over the single-motor model. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph now takes 5.9 seconds, making it the quickest Eclipse Cross ever.

Battery capacity remains unchanged at 64 kWh, but engineers optimized the thermal management system to maintain performance under sustained load. As a result, the EPA-estimated range drops only slightly from 248 miles in the FWD version to 236 miles for the AWD. That trade-off is expected to satisfy buyers who prioritize traction and handling over maximum range, especially in regions with harsh winters.

Mitsubishi also updated the Eclipse Cross EV’s infotainment and safety packages. The 12.3-inch touchscreen now supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard. The AWD model adds a 360-degree camera system and a new “Snow Mode” that adjusts torque distribution for enhanced stability on slippery roads. Level 2 semi-autonomous driving features, including adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist, come included.

Pricing starts at $38,995 for the FWD base model, while the AWD variant begins at $42,295—about $3,300 more. That positions the Eclipse Cross EV AWD below rivals like the Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 AWD, both of which start around $47,000. However, it faces direct comparison with the Chevrolet Equinox EV AWD ($44,995) and the upcoming Subaru Solterra AWD update.

Industry analysts view this expansion as a pragmatic move rather than a game-changer. “Mitsubishi is leveraging its off-road brand heritage in a segment where few competitors offer true AWD at this price point,” said Sarah Lin, lead EV analyst at AutoForesight. “But the Eclipse Cross EV still lags in fast-charging speed—maxing out at 125 kW versus 200 kW+ for Hyundai and Kia.”

The new AWD model arrives in US dealerships in April 2025. Mitsubishi expects it to account for roughly 40% of Eclipse Cross EV sales, up from 30% in initial projections. The company has not yet announced plans for a larger battery pack or a performance “Ralliart” variant, but insiders suggest those are under evaluation for the 2026 model year.

For now, the Eclipse Cross EV lineup stands as one of the most affordable AWD compact electric SUVs on the market. With the added traction and a modest range penalty, Mitsubishi aims to capture budget-conscious buyers who still want all-weather capability without the premium price tag attached to most electric SUVs.
