A 27-year-old man was shot in the head while sitting inside his car in East Flatbush early Monday, leaving him in critical condition, according to the NYPD.
The shooting happened at approximately 3:20 a.m. outside a residential building at 980 Rutland Road. Officers responding to the scene found the victim with a single gunshot wound to the left side of his head.
Emergency medical personnel rushed the man to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center. Officials said he was listed in critical condition as of later Monday morning. His name has not been released, pending notification of family members.
Investigators recovered eight shell casings at the scene. The block remained closed for several hours while crime scene technicians processed forensic evidence, including photographing the car and collecting bullet fragments.
Police have not identified a suspect in the attack. A police source said investigators were looking into a gray four-door sedan seen speeding eastbound on Rutland Road shortly after the shots were fired. No description of the gunman has been released.
A police official said detectives were reviewing surveillance footage from nearby homes and businesses and conducting a door-to-door canvass of the neighborhood. No arrest has been made so far.
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. The victim was alone in the car at the time, according to authorities.
The incident adds to concerns about gun violence in the East Flatbush area, where community leaders have pushed for more patrols and investments in anti-violence programs in recent years. The intersection where the shooting occurred is a busy residential corridor, and many residents have spoken out about ongoing safety worries.
