A 27-year-old man is in stable condition after being shot in the chest Wednesday afternoon in West Baltimore’s Upton neighborhood, Baltimore Police said Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Officers responded to a report of a shooting about 3:30 p.m. in the 1500 block of Pennsylvania Avenue. They found the victim and summoned medics, who took him to an area hospital. Police described his injuries as serious but not life-threatening, and hospital staff listed him in stable condition. His name has not been released.
No one else was injured, and detectives have not yet announced an arrest. Investigators remained at the scene until at least 5 p.m., working near Capital Lounge & Restaurant, a two-story red-brick building on a block that also contains two convenience stores, a pharmacy and the Royal Casino liquor store.
The shooting happened roughly a block east of a large city recreation center, in a corridor that sees steady foot traffic on weekday afternoons. Across Pennsylvania Avenue, several residents of a three-story brick apartment complex gathered along the curb and watched police tape go up. They told The Baltimore Sun they had not seen or heard anything before officers arrived.
Detectives have not released a description of a possible shooter or a motive. Investigators are determining whether nearby businesses have surveillance cameras that could help identify whoever fired the gun. Police have not said whether the victim and attacker knew each other.
The attack adds to the city’s tally of gun violence, although the numbers show a slight improvement this year. As of Monday morning, Baltimore Police had recorded 232 nonfatal shootings in 2026, seven fewer than at the same point in 2025. That means the count stood at 239 at this time last year, according to the department’s data.
The figures cover people who were shot and survived. They do not include homicides, accidental discharges or self-inflicted wounds.
West Baltimore has long been the part of the city with the heaviest concentration of shootings, and Upton sits near the center of that challenge. City officials and community groups have focused outreach and violence-prevention efforts on the neighborhoods surrounding Pennsylvania Avenue, but residents say the danger has become a familiar part of life.
Police are asking anyone who was on Pennsylvania Avenue around the time of the shooting to come forward. Even small details, such as the direction of a sound or a car leaving quickly, can prove important.
