Conducted by the community platform LocalCircles, the survey polled over 22,000 owners of petrol vehicles purchased in the 2023-24 model years across India. The startling result: 59% of these new car owners reported a mileage decline of more than 10% since early 2025. A quarter of respondents experienced drops exceeding 20%. This stands in stark contrast to the Indian government's stance that its nationwide E20 fuel (20% ethanol) should reduce efficiency by only 3-5% due to ethanol's lower energy content. The scale of the reported loss suggests factors beyond the ethanol blend itself, with survey analysts pointing squarely at potential "petrol adulteration or contamination" within the supply chain.
The issue appears widespread, not limited by vehicle age. The survey found that 66% of owners of pre-2023 model petrol vehicles also reported efficiency losses over 10%. This consistency across old and new engines strengthens the argument that the root cause lies in the fuel being dispensed, not in automotive engineering. Automakers, including Mercedes-Benz's Indian unit, have previously noted that many consumer complaints often trace back to adulterated fuel rather than the ethanol blend's inherent properties. The Indian government, while promoting ethanol blending to cut oil imports and emissions, has concurrently directed states to intensify checks for fuel adulteration.

"The scale of the mileage drop... makes independent, on-ground fuel-quality testing all the more essential," the group stated, planning to escalate the matter to authorities.
