A 29-year-old man is in police custody following a high-speed incident in Strabane that left multiple cars damaged and ended with a foot chase. The incident, reported on the evening of April 8, 2025, has prompted an appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage.

Police received a report around 9:50 p.m. about a suspected drink-driver in the Melmount Road area. Witnesses described a black Seat Leon traveling at high speed along the A5 toward Omagh. The driver attempted to overtake another vehicle, colliding twice with a blue Jeep before fleeing the scene.

The damaged car stopped on Melmount Road, and the driver abandoned it, fleeing on foot. Officers quickly located the suspect along the A5 and arrested him on suspicion of assault on police, criminal damage, and driving while unfit through drink or drugs. He was also arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving while disqualified.

The suspect remains in custody as investigations continue. Inspector Slater urged anyone with information or dashcam footage to contact police via the online witness appeal form, quoting reference 1658 of 04/09/26, or call 101. Anonymous tips can be made to Crimestoppers at 0800 555 111 or online.

This incident underscores the ongoing dangers of impaired driving. In the United States, drunk driving kills approximately 10,500 people annually, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. While this case occurred in Northern Ireland, it serves as a stark reminder of the risks posed by alcohol and drug-impaired drivers everywhere.

Local residents expressed shock at the recklessness of the driver. “It’s a miracle no one was seriously hurt,” said a nearby shopkeeper who witnessed the aftermath. Police have not yet released the man’s name, and charges are expected to be filed later this week.

Authorities are particularly interested in any dashcam footage from vehicles traveling along the A5 near Melmount Road between 9:30 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. on the night of the incident. Even seemingly minor details could prove crucial to the investigation.

The case also highlights the problem of driving while disqualified, an offense that carries severe penalties in the UK and Ireland. Offenders can face up to six months in prison, an unlimited fine, and an extended driving ban. Repeat offenders may even have their vehicles seized and crushed.

As the investigation progresses, police are reminding the public that driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs is not only illegal but also endangers lives. They encourage anyone who suspects a driver is impaired to call 999 immediately rather than attempting to intervene.
