As of March 2025, Stellantis is laying the groundwork for a sweeping platform strategy that could reshape its North American lineup. The company’s new STLA One architecture—designed to be flexible enough for multiple powertrain types—is set to debut with the next-generation Jeep Cherokee, built at the upgraded Belvidere Assembly Plant in Illinois. The automaker plans to scale this underpinning to more than 30 distinct models by 2035, a move that signals both cost discipline and ambitious market coverage.
A platform built for scale
The STLA One is not just another vehicle platform; it is Stellantis’s backbone for the future. The architecture can accommodate internal combustion, hybrid, and electric powertrains, giving each brand the freedom to tailor vehicles while reusing shared components. This modular approach is expected to slash engineering costs per model and streamline factory production. According to a recent industry analysis by IHS Markit, such common platforms can reduce development time by up to 30% and cut capital expenditure per vehicle by 15–20%—a crucial advantage in an era of rising R&D costs.
Stellantis’s internal target is for the STLA One to eventually span segments from compact crossovers to full-size SUVs and light commercial vehicles. By the end of this decade, the company wants its combined product range to cover 90% of the North American market. The platform’s scalability will be the key enabler.
Belvidere plant: from idle to core
The Belvidere facility, which had been idled for several years, is now at the center of Stellantis’s U.S. manufacturing revival. The company has raised its total investment in the plant to more than $800 million—up from the $600 million announced in October 2025. By July 2026, over $60 million had already been funneled into stamping, body shop, paint, and assembly upgrades. The investment is part of Stellantis’s broader $13 billion commitment to U.S. manufacturing, which will introduce 11 new vehicles and refresh 12 existing models across the country by 2030.
Production of the next-generation Jeep Cherokee is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2028, with retail sales expected in the second half of 2029. Industry observers note that the Cherokee’s successful launch will be critical for proving the STLA One platform’s reliability and flexibility before it spreads to other brands like Dodge, Chrysler, and Ram.
Recent lineup expansion signals confidence
Even before the STLA One arrival, Stellantis has been reinforcing the Cherokee nameplate. For the 2027 model year, the company expanded the Cherokee lineup with three new trim levels: Trailhawk, Overland, and Upland. These additions are designed to keep the current-generation SUV competitive while the next-generation model is developed. The Trailhawk, in particular, caters to off-road enthusiasts, a segment where Jeep commands strong loyalty.
Expert perspective: the platform payoff
“A common architecture like STLA One allows Stellantis to spread massive development costs across millions of vehicles,” says Michael Dunne, CEO of Dunne Insights, a global automotive consultancy. “The real challenge will be balancing brand differentiation with cost savings. Jeep buyers expect rugged character; Chrysler buyers want comfort. If Stellantis can execute that, the platform could be a game-changer.”
The company’s strategy mirrors moves by rivals such as Volkswagen’s MEB and Toyota’s TNGA, but Stellantis aims to differentiate by offering more powertrain flexibility within a single architecture. That could help it adapt to slower-than-expected EV adoption in North America without abandoning electric ambitions.
What’s next
With the STLA One platform slated for more than 30 vehicles, Stellantis is effectively betting its future on a single structural foundation. If successful, the approach could lower vehicle prices, improve margins, and accelerate product launches. The next-generation Jeep Cherokee will be the first test—and the Belvidere plant will be the crucible. By 2035, virtually every Stellantis vehicle sold in the U.S. could ride on some version of the STLA One.
