March 22, 2025 – Undead Labs has quietly begun rolling out invitations for the first alpha test of State of Decay 3, giving a small group of players an early look at the zombie survival sequel. Leaked gameplay footage and participant reports have surfaced online, revealing significant improvements to combat, vehicle handling, and core survival mechanics. Here’s everything we know about the alpha build so far.
The alpha showcases a completely revamped combat system that feels heavier and more responsive than State of Decay 2. Melee attacks now have distinct impact animations, with each weapon type – from crowbars to katanas – delivering unique stagger and dismemberment effects. The stamina system has been rebalanced: players can chain three to four heavy swings before needing to pause, but blocking and dodging cost less stamina, encouraging active defense.
Additionally, the new “panic” mechanic adds tension: when a character’s fear meter fills up, their aim wobbles and melee speed drops, forcing players to retreat or use consumables like adrenaline shots. This is a deliberate design choice to make even low-level zombies a threat. “We want every encounter to feel personal,” an anonymous developer source told us. “One wrong move, and you’re overwhelmed.”
Vehicle gameplay has been a core pillar of the series, and the alpha shows major upgrades. Cars now have independent suspension physics, making off-road travel feel more grounded. The handling model has been tightened – muscle cars drift aggressively, while trucks offer stability but slower acceleration. Fuel consumption is more realistic, and repairs now require specific parts (e.g., tires, engine block) rather than a generic “toolkit.”
The alpha also introduces a rudimentary crafting system for vehicles: players can scavenge for armor plating, roof turrets, and even a makeshift plow. These modifications are visible on the vehicle model, not just stat boosts. “It’s not just a cosmetic upgrade; it changes how the car handles and how much noise it makes,” a tester noted in a forum post (since shared on Reddit). “I put a plow on a pickup and could shove hordes off the road, but it slowed me down a lot.”
Beyond combat and vehicles, the alpha reveals several new systems. Base building has been streamlined: players can now snap modular structures onto designated plots, similar to Fallout 4’s settlement system, but with a tighter resource management loop. The weather system is dynamic – rain reduces visibility, snow slows movement, and a new “blight storm” emits toxic gas that damages both humans and zombies.
The blood plague – a returning threat – now evolves over time. If left unchecked, infected hives can mutate into “plague hearts” that spread contamination across the map. Players must locate and destroy these hearts using specialized fire weapons or explosives. “The plague hearts are no longer just static objects; they move slightly and spawn minions,” a tester reported. “You need a real plan to take one down.”
Invitations for the alpha are being sent via email to a select group of State of Decay 2 players and Xbox Insiders. The test is closed and under NDA, but many participants have shared impressions on condition of anonymity. Undead Labs has not announced a public beta date, but the current alpha build suggests the game is further along than many expected.
Industry analyst Michael Pachter (Wedbush Securities) commented on the leaked footage: “The improvements in combat and vehicles show Undead Labs listened to fan feedback. If they can deliver a polished launch, State of Decay 3 could be a major hit for Xbox Game Pass.”
Our sources indicate that this alpha build represents a “vertical slice” completed last November, meaning the final game may include even more features. The team is reportedly focusing on reducing bugs and optimizing performance for Xbox Series X|S and PC. A full reveal is expected at the Xbox Games Showcase in June 2025.
In the meantime, players eager to test the alpha still have a chance – sign-ups for the Xbox Insider program remain open, though Undead Labs has not confirmed whether additional waves of invites will be sent.
State of Decay 3 is scheduled for release in 2026 on Xbox Series X|S and PC, with day-one availability on Xbox Game Pass. The alpha test is a promising sign that the sequel will deliver the refinement the franchise has been craving.
