July 21, 2025 – Smart has put the electric car world on notice with a bold street-art reveal in Melbourne, Australia. A massive mural depicting the upcoming Smart #2 appeared overnight, confirming that the long-rumored successor to the iconic fortwo is finally ready for production. The all-electric two-seater, built on Smart’s proprietary Electric Compact Architecture (ECA), promises a 35.7 kWh battery pack good for nearly 300 km on the WLTP cycle, and DC fast charging that can take the battery from 10 to 80 percent in under 20 minutes. The world premiere is locked for the Paris Motor Show in October 2026.

The mural, painted on a wall in Melbourne’s Fitzroy neighborhood, shows the Smart #2 in a vibrant blue finish, with distinctive “#2” badging and a sleek, city-friendly silhouette. Smart chose an artistic reveal rather than a traditional auto show preview, signaling a shift toward a more lifestyle-oriented brand positioning. The decision to debut the design in Australia—a market not traditionally associated with micro EVs—surprised many analysts, but it aligns with Smart’s global ambitions under parent company Geely.

Under the skin, the Smart #2 retains the ultra-compact dimensions that made the fortwo a parking legend, but with a thoroughly modern electric powertrain. The 35.7 kWh battery, likely sourced from CATL, targets a real-world range of around 280 km in mixed driving, with the WLTP certification expected to hit 295 km. The DC fast charging capability (up to 150 kW) means a quick top-up during a grocery run, and the 6.95-meter curb-to-curb turning circle makes U-turns a breeze in tight city streets. Smart claims the #2 will be the most maneuverable production EV on the market.

One of the most discussed aspects of the #2 is its interior. Early spy shots suggest a minimalist dashboard dominated by a 12.8-inch touchscreen running a new “SmartOS” interface, with over-the-air updates and Google built-in. Physical buttons are kept to a minimum, and the cabin features recycled materials throughout. The two-seat layout maximizes cargo space—enough for a week’s shopping or a small suitcase—while the optional panoramic glass roof opens up the small cabin.

From a competitive standpoint, the Smart #2 directly challenges the Microlino and the upcoming Mini Electric hatchback (in its three-door form). However, Smart’s price positioning remains a mystery. Insiders hint at a starting price around €25,000 in Europe (roughly $27,000 USD), which would undercut the Mini Electric by several thousand dollars. For the US market, Smart has not confirmed a launch
