Polestar has officially teased its latest design study, the “Formula 2030” concept, offering a first look at the visual language that will define its upcoming production models. The concept, created under the direction of chief designer Philipp Römers, is set to influence the next-generation Polestar 2, expected in 2027, and the all-new Polestar 7. The Swedish brand released a darkened image of the concept, which we have lightened to reveal more detail. The concept will be shown privately in Gothenburg before a public debut later this year.
Evolving the design DNA
The Formula 2030 concept builds on Polestar’s existing design identity while introducing fresh elements. The most recognizable feature is the evolution of the brand’s signature “Dual Blade” headlights, which now appear sharper and more integrated into the front fascia. The overall silhouette appears longer and lower than current models, suggesting a more aerodynamic approach. The concept also showcases a reinterpretation of the brand’s “Thor’s Hammer” daytime running lights, though the exact execution remains under wraps.
New materials and sustainability focus
A key emphasis of the Formula 2030 is the exploration of sustainable materials. Polestar has been vocal about its commitment to carbon neutrality, and this concept is expected to feature interior elements made from recycled polymers, bio-based composites, and plant-based leather alternatives. The concept also hints at a modular battery architecture that improves recyclability, aligning with the brand’s circular economy goals. “We are not just designing a car; we are designing a statement about the future of mobility,” Römers said in a statement.
Production implications
The concept’s cues will first appear on the next Polestar 2, which is slated for a 2027 launch. The current Polestar 2, launched in 2020, is ready for a major overhaul. The new model is expected to adopt a more coupe-like profile, similar to the concept, and will likely feature an improved infotainment system with Google’s next-generation Android Automotive platform. Following that, the Polestar 7, positioned as a smaller SUV, will also borrow design elements from the Formula 2030. Polestar has not yet confirmed production timelines for the 7, but industry insiders expect it to arrive around 2028.
Exclusive insight: What the concept reveals about Polestar’s strategy
Beyond styling, the Formula 2030 concept signals a strategic shift for Polestar. The brand is aiming to move upmarket, competing directly with Porsche’s electric offerings and the upcoming Mercedes-Benz EQ models. The concept’s low-slung profile and aggressive stance suggest a performance-oriented future, possibly with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive setup producing over 600 horsepower. Additionally, the use of lightweight composites could improve range efficiency, a critical factor in the EV segment. Polestar is also exploring vehicle-to-grid technology, which could be integrated into the production versions.
Public debut and next steps
The Formula 2030 will be unveiled at a private event in Gothenburg later this spring, followed by a public debut at a major auto show in the second half of 2025. Polestar has not yet confirmed which show, but speculation points to the Geneva Motor Show or the Los Angeles Auto Show. The company is expected to release more images and technical details closer to the debut.
Our take
The Formula 2030 concept is a bold statement from Polestar, showing that the brand is not content to rest on its current design. The evolution of the “Dual Blade” lights and the introduction of sustainable materials are both necessary and timely. While the concept is clearly a design study, the production cues are strongly evident. If Polestar can execute on the promise of a more aerodynamic, sustainable, and powerful lineup, it will be well-positioned to challenge established players in the premium EV space. The fact that the company is willing to share a teaser this early suggests confidence in the direction. We look forward to seeing the full reveal.
