The new playground at Point Park in Warren City is nearing its final stages, with construction now 95% complete. Warren City Department of Public Works Superintendent Joe Reinke delivered the latest progress report to the Parks, Recreation and Landscape Commission this week, confirming that the remaining structural components are being finished. As of April 7, 2025, crews are focused on installing the final pieces while intentionally keeping some key elements off-site to discourage public use during active construction.

The rubber safety surfacing—a critical component for modern playground compliance—arrived on Tuesday and is scheduled for immediate installation. Once applied, the surface will require approximately three days to cure properly. The area will be fenced off throughout the curing period, and city officials strongly urge the public to stay off the surface to ensure optimal adhesion and safety. This measure follows standard industry practices to prevent premature wear and potential injury.

Before the playground project began, the city completed several upgrades at Point Park, including a new pavilion and improved storm drainage infrastructure. These enhancements aim to make the park more functional and resilient during heavy rain events. The pavilion, already in use, provides shaded seating for families and community gatherings.

Looking ahead, once the playground is fully operational, LED lighting will be installed to improve visibility and extend usable hours into the evening. Reinke also mentioned that the city is exploring the addition of a security camera at the park, a move that aligns with broader municipal efforts to enhance safety and deter vandalism. “I think this is going to make it an even better complex,” Reinke said during the commission meeting.

The ongoing improvements received a significant financial boost from a $250,000 grant awarded through the Congressional Directed Spending program, secured by U.S. Senator John Fetterman in February. The funds are earmarked for the construction of an ADA-accessible restroom at the park, currently planned for 2027. This restroom will ensure the park complies with the Americans with Disabilities Act, making it more inclusive for visitors with mobility challenges.

Commission members expressed optimism that the new playground will attract more visitors to the area, potentially increasing attendance at the nearby C.A.R Pool. The combination of modern play equipment, enhanced lighting, and future accessible amenities positions Point Park as a regional destination for families. Parks across the United States are increasingly incorporating inclusive design and sustainable features, and Warren City’s investment reflects this national trend. The ADA-accessible restroom, though years away, signals a long-term commitment to equity and accessibility in public recreation.

As construction winds down, residents are advised to watch for official announcements regarding the playground’s official opening. The city will communicate the exact timeline once the surfacing is cured and all equipment is certified safe. For now, the fenced-off area remains off-limits to ensure a smooth and safe completion.
