Police have charged six people—including three 16-year-olds—after a chaotic pursuit on the Monash Freeway brought outbound traffic to a halt on Tuesday, April 28, 2026. The charges follow two alleged aggravated burglaries and a chase that ended with armed officers making arrests on the freeway itself.
Investigators allege the group first stole a four-wheel drive and an SUV during a home invasion in Brighton East at about 5:30 a.m. The same vehicles were then used hours later in what police describe as a second aggravated burglary in Hampton Park.
Around 8 a.m., officers spotted the four-wheel drive being driven erratically in Doveton and attempted to stop it. The pursuit quickly escalated, with Victoria Police Air Wing helicopters joining the operation from above.
The vehicles moved through a series of eastern and south-eastern suburbs before merging onto the Monash Freeway. Rather than chase the group through peak-hour traffic, specialist officers took the rare step of shutting down five outbound lanes to bring the incident to a controlled end.
The lane closure left vehicles completely blocked in that direction, with nowhere to move as police set up a containment zone on the highway. More than a dozen armed officers then moved in and detained the suspects on the road surface.
Images from the scene showed people being held face-down on the asphalt while officers secured the area. One witness told Nine News the sight was “scary,” describing a row of police cars, armed units and the surreal sight of an empty freeway during a normally busy morning.
Traffic remained at a standstill while officers processed the scene. The Monash is one of Melbourne’s busiest commuter corridors, so the disruption was felt across the south-east long after the arrests.
The charges were spread across six accused individuals: three 16-year-olds, a 17-year-old, a 19-year-old and a 20-year-old.
The first 16-year-old, from the Casey area, has been charged with intentionally exposing an emergency worker to risk by driving, reckless conduct endangering life, reckless conduct endangering serious injury, theft of a motor vehicle and unlicensed driving.
A second 16-year-old, from Cardinia, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and committing an indictable offence while on bail.
A third 16-year-old faces a theft-of-a-motor-vehicle charge.
The 17-year-old, also from Casey, has been charged with armed robbery, aggravated burglary and two counts of theft of a motor vehicle.
The three 16-year-olds are scheduled to appear before the Children’s Court of Victoria on Wednesday. The 17-year-old is also within the youth justice system, though police have not yet confirmed his next court date.
The 19-year-old, from Cranbourne East, has been charged with theft of a motor vehicle and will be dealt with through the adult court system. The 20-year-old, from Wheelers Hill, remains in hospital under police guard, and his exact charges have not been announced.
One detail stands out: the Cardinia 16-year-old is accused of committing an indictable offence while already on bail. That matters in Victoria, where bail decisions increasingly focus on a suspect’s pattern of offending.
A formal bail application has not yet been outlined beyond the court listing. Legal observers note that being charged with a fresh offence while on bail can weigh heavily against a young person’s chances of release before trial, particularly when the underlying allegations involve stolen vehicles and burglaries.
With the three youngest accused due in court Wednesday, the coming days will clarify how the cases move through the system. Police have not ruled out additional charges as forensic work continues, and the 20-year-old’s status will become clearer once he is discharged from hospital.
For the wider community, the incident is another reminder that high-speed pursuits on major freeways carry serious consequences. Closing five lanes on the Monash was an extreme step, but it also reflects Victoria Police’s stated approach of prioritising public safety over continuing a chase through congested traffic.
The case now shifts to court, where the focus will be on the alleged offending, the bail issue, and what led a group of young people to be on the freeway in stolen vehicles in the first place.
