Jaguar took the wraps off its next chapter in New York on May 17, 2026, unveiling the Type 01, a four-door electric grand tourer that marks the company's most dramatic product shift since the E-Type era. The production model closely mirrors the Type 00 concept from 2024 and signals how Jaguar intends to reposition itself in the ultra-luxury EV segment.
The headline figure is raw output. Three electric motors generate 1,030 PS and 1,365 Nm of torque, pushing the Type 01 from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.2 seconds. That makes it the most powerful production Jaguar ever built, outpacing the V8-powered supercars that once dominated the brand's lineup.
Power delivery is anchored by a new EV platform. The Type 01 rides on Jaguar Electric Architecture, a dedicated skateboard design developed around the car's long-bonnet silhouette and extreme performance capacity. An 850-volt architecture feeds a 118-kWh battery pack, which Jaguar estimates will deliver up to 644 kilometers on the EPA testing cycle in the U.S.
Charging figures are equally aggressive. Jaguar says a 350-kW DC fast charger can add roughly 321 kilometers of range in 13 minutes. Those numbers, the company cautions, will vary based on temperature, driving style, and battery condition. Still, the fast-charging capability positions the Type 01 favorably against rivals like the Porsche Taycan and Lucid Air.
Orders open in early 2027, with first deliveries later that year. Jaguar lists a starting U.S. price of $130,500, placing the Type 01 against the Mercedes EQS, the Tesla Model S Plaid, and upcoming electric grand tourers from Bentley and Aston Martin.
The design is intentionally polarizing. The long hood, swept roofline, and extended tail give the Type 01 proportions unlike any current EV sedan. Jaguar designers drew inspiration from the E-Type and XJS, yet the execution is resolutely modern—23-inch wheels, flush surfaces, and active aero elements like adjustable air vanes and a three-stage rear spoiler that help achieve a 0.23 drag coefficient, a record for the brand.
The interior is a study in minimalism and occupant separation. Four individual seats are divided by a central structural spine. The driver faces a 24-inch OLED display, while a seven-inch touchscreen governs essential controls. Jaguar also developed a bespoke audio system with a full-width soundbar and in-seat speakers, aiming for a cabin experience that complements the car's grand touring mission.
Engineering insight comes directly from the racetrack. Jaguar says lessons from its Formula E program—especially around power modulation, regen calibration, and high-speed stability—shaped the Type 01's chassis tuning and electric drive response. The car is designed, engineered, and built in the UK, and its development team leaned heavily on British facilities.
The name itself carries layered meaning. "Type" honors Jaguar's heritage nomenclature, "0" signals zero tailpipe emissions, and "1" marks the first vehicle in the new generation. That branding choice reflects a broader strategy: Jaguar is no longer positioning itself as a conventional luxury automaker but as a design-led, electrified niche player.
Managing director Rawdon Glover framed the car as a statement of intent. In launch remarks, he described the Type 01 as combining the company's traditional grand touring character with its latest advances in electric vehicle engineering—a balance that will define Jaguar's next lineup of EVs.
Context worth noting: The Type 01 arrives amid a volatile EV market in the U.S., where consumer interest in large luxury sedans is growing but price sensitivity remains a challenge. With $130,500 starting pricing, Jaguar is not chasing volume. Rather, it is betting that a distinct design language and a strong British identity will attract buyers looking for an alternative to mainstream electric flagships.
Production readiness remains the biggest open question. The Type 01 doesn't enter production until 2027, and Jaguar has not yet confirmed full specifications for final customer cars. The company says more details—including exact EPA range figures and confirmed equipment packages—will be announced closer to the order-bank opening.
Bottom line: The Type 01 is a bold, technically capable and visually disruptive machine. Whether it can restore Jaguar's status as a serious player in the luxury segment will depend on execution, reliability, and how well the brand's new direction resonates with American buyers.
