FREELANDER, the British premium all-terrain brand co-developed by Jaguar Land Rover and Chery Automobile, gave international guests an up-close look at its next-generation cockpit technology at the 2026 Chery International User Summit in Wuhu. On Nov. 1, 2026, the company demonstrated a large language model-powered voice assistant, a dashboard-spanning 8K Mini LED display, and a smartphone-based valet parking function on the FREELANDER 8 — a clear bet that software now sells premium SUVs as much as horsepower and ground clearance do.

The summit, hosted by Chery Automobile (9973.HK), has become one of the Chinese automaker's most important events for building relationships with overseas dealers, media and partners. For FREELANDER, it was also a statement of intent. The marque revives the Freelander nameplate retired by Land Rover years ago and is positioned as a standalone British Premium Intelligent All-Terrain Brand under the JLR-Chery joint development. With the FREELANDER 8 as its first full expression, the brand is aiming squarely at buyers who want heritage styling and modern digital capability in one package.

A voice assistant that understands the car

The centerpiece was the AI voice assistant, presented by Lucia Mao, CEO of FREELANDER International. Rather than a fixed command tree, the system runs on a large language model tuned for FREELANDER's own context. That means drivers can hold something closer to an actual conversation — asking questions about how a system works, comparing drive modes, or checking the meaning of a dashboard warning — and get a coherent answer instead of a "Sorry, I didn't get that" response.

The assistant is part of an intelligent cockpit built around the Qualcomm SA8295P automotive-grade chip, which FREELANDER fits as standard across the entire lineup, not just on top-spec cars. The interface renders in immersive 3D with four themes. Equally important is what's missing from the screen: FREELANDER kept physical buttons for the functions people use most. For an all-terrain vehicle that may be bouncing over rocks or crawling through mud, having tactile controls is a usability decision, not a design throwback.

One display, stretched across the dash

The visual anchor is the Surround View Gallery. At its center sits a 46.3-inch Mini LED Farside Integrated Display with 8K resolution, spanning roughly 1.2 meters across the dashboard. It consolidates seven core modules — driving data, navigation, all-terrain status, and more — into a single continuous surface. A 15.6-inch center display handles secondary interactions, and an optional 17.3-inch ceiling-mounted screen brings entertainment to rear-seat passengers.

The all-terrain module is more than a gimmick. Having suspension mode, terrain response and wheel articulation data directly ahead of the driver keeps eyes where they belong when conditions get rough. Combined with the Around View Monitoring system and its transparent chassis view, the FREELANDER 8 is clearly designed to make off-road driving less dependent on a spotter's shouted instructions.

Parking from outside the car

FREELANDER's third showcase piece was SIVP — Super Intelligent Valet Parking. In supported scenarios, the owner can trigger parking or call the vehicle back through a smartphone app. The car handles steering, throttle and brakes while the driver monitors from outside. FREELANDER was quick to hedge its language: availability depends on the market, operation depends on system conditions, and the driver remains responsible at all times. That caution reflects the regulatory reality around automated parking features, which are drawing closer scrutiny from safety regulators and insurers alike.

L2+ assistance as standard

Beyond the headline features, the FREELANDER 8 comes with L2+ advanced driver assistance as standard. The suite packs in more than 30 functions, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Centring Control, Automatic Emergency Braking, and Around View Monitoring with Transparent Chassis. Automatic parking and remote parking are also included. The company emphasizes that these systems assist the driver rather than replace them; the vehicle is not fully autonomous and won't pretend to be.

A showcase that was also a test drive

The demonstrations took place in the FREELANDER Nightfall space at the Hengli Hotel in Wuhu, where guests were met by Mornine, an embodied AI humanoid robot developed under Chery International's AiMOGA brand. The event paired the static tech displays with hands-on driving sessions, letting international visitors experience the voice assistant and driver-assist systems in real traffic rather than on a stage. For a brand trying to establish credibility outside China, that seat time is arguably more persuasive than any specification sheet.

Why the timing matters

FREELANDER's technology push comes as Chinese automakers accelerate exports of entire software-defined vehicle experiences, not just metal and batteries. By wrapping that tech in a British badge with genuine heritage, Chery is attempting to straddle two worlds: the old-world trust associated with the Freelander name and the new-world intelligence of LLM-based cockpits and connected parking.

Whether that formula works will depend on execution. The FREELANDER 8 has the specification sheet to draw attention, and the brand is clearly pitching itself at a premium. But premium buyers are a demanding audience; they expect software to be reliable, updates to be meaningful, and the driving experience to live up to the badge. The international guests at Wuhu got a convincing first look. The rest of the market will be the final judge.
