EV charging Yorktown

As of Oct. 6, 2025, electric vehicle owners in northern Westchester have a new public charging option: the John C. Hart Memorial Library in Yorktown. On Oct. 1, town and library officials marked the official launch of three ChargePoint stations, providing six charging ports in the library’s main parking lot.

The library has hosted the project in planning for several years, according to Library Director Yvonne Cech. Funding came through a combination of county and state grants, with approval from the Yorktown Town Board. The stations are pay-per-use and accept both ChargePoint accounts and credit/debit cards, making them accessible even for drivers who don’t regularly use the network.

Supervisor Ed Lachterman told attendees that the location is especially practical for hybrid or electric-car owners, and encouraged residents to pair a charging session with a visit to the library. “Come on down and check out the library,” he said.

Councilman Sergio Esposito described the appeal in simpler terms: a driver can pull in, read a book, recharge the car, and return home without the hassle of hunting for a station elsewhere.

The new Level 2 units use the industry-standard J1772 connector, which works with most plug-in vehicles sold in the U.S. Users can monitor charging progress through the ChargePoint mobile app, and the parking lot is equipped with free Wi-Fi, so drivers can catch up on work or emails during a charge.

Cech stressed that the installation isn’t just for library users. “It’s an important service for the entire community,” she said. She also noted that visitors needing to spend time in their cars while charging are welcome to do so.

Yorktown is gradually expanding its public EV infrastructure. The library stations join existing chargers at Staples Plaza, giving drivers more options within the town. Councilman Patrick Murphy thanked the supervisor and library leadership for moving the project forward. “We’re investing in Yorktown because we see the need for it,” he said.

This type of infrastructure is especially significant for people who live in multi-family housing or lack a private garage. Federal research shows that although most EV charging occurs at home, public stations are crucial for households without dedicated off-street parking. By placing chargers at a library with predictable hours and a comfortable indoor space, Yorktown is reducing one of the biggest practical obstacles to EV adoption.

The rollout also supports Yorktown’s participation in the New York State Climate Smart Communities program, which encourages local governments to invest in clean transportation and emissions-reduction measures. Public chargers help ease range anxiety and signal that the town is prepared for the shift toward electric mobility.

The library itself remains open to the public throughout its ongoing renovation. While construction continues on parts of the building, the parking lot and charging stations are available for regular use.

With the addition of these stations, Yorktown’s public charging network now covers both a shopping corridor and a civic destination, giving local EV owners more flexibility—and helping draw eco-conscious visitors to the library at the same time.
