Electric vehicle sales in the United States are accelerating, thanks in large part to the federal tax credit of up to $7,500 and increasing state-level incentives. A new analysis of registration data from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Argonne National Laboratory reveals which ZIP codes saw the highest EV uptake in the first half of 2025 among vehicles purchased with the full federal credit. The results might surprise you, as they point to suburbs far from city centers, not affluent coastal enclaves.
The analysis focuses on EVs that qualified for the full $7,500 federal tax credit under the Inflation Reduction Act, either through direct purchase or lease pass-through. Many buyers also benefited from state and utility rebates, making EVs more accessible to middle-income households. The data highlights a clear geographic pattern: the top communities are on the outer edges of major metropolitan areas, where residents face long commutes and high fuel costs.
Which U.S. zip codes lead in EV adoption?
The overall top ZIP code for EV adoption in the first half of 2025 is Hemet, California (92544), followed by Palmdale, California (93551) and Lancaster, California (93534) — all in the Antelope Valley, northeast of Los Angeles. The fourth and fifth spots go to Katy, Texas (77494) and Frisco, Texas (75034), both fast-growing suburbs of Houston and Dallas respectively.
