March 31, 2025 – The major drainage upgrade in Byron Bay’s town centre is making steady progress, with the active construction zone now stretching from Williams Lane to Fletcher Street along Byron Street. This critical infrastructure project, aimed at reducing flooding frequency and severity, is entering a new phase that will bring significant changes to local traffic patterns for the coming months.
Work crews have shifted focus to the central section of Byron Street, preparing the road for final surfacing and drainage connections. Once this segment is completed, the operation will move into the intersection of Byron Street and Fletcher Street, a key chokepoint that has historically contributed to localized flooding during heavy rain events.
Christopher Soulsby, Manager of Assets and Major Projects for Byron Shire Council, emphasized that the shifting work zone will require drivers and pedestrians to adjust their routes. “As we progress down Byron Street, there will be a few changes to how people access the road, and everyone needs to be aware of the new restrictions,” he said.

Soulsby urged continued support for local businesses, noting that foot traffic remains possible. “Byron Street is still accessible on foot, and we encourage everyone to keep shopping and dining in the town centre. We’re on the home stretch now, with Byron Street expected to be completed by November this year,” he added.
In a related development, line marking on Jonson Street has recently been finished, and five new car parking spaces have been installed near the Visitors Centre. This addition aims to offset some of the temporary parking loss caused by the construction zones and to improve access for tourists and residents alike.
The iconic clock tower on Byron Street, which was temporarily removed during the early stages of the upgrade, will be reinstated after all works are complete later this year. The restoration is part of the broader town centre enhancement plan.
The Byron Drainage Upgrade Town Centre Catchment project is funded through a partnership between the Australian Government, the New South Wales Government, and Byron Shire Council’s Byron Bay Town Centre Masterplan Reserve. The total investment represents a significant commitment to flood resilience in one of the region’s most popular tourist destinations.
Beyond the drainage improvements, the project also includes upgrades to road surfaces and footpaths throughout the town centre, providing a smoother and safer experience for pedestrians and cyclists. Once finished, the system is expected to substantially reduce the impact of flash flooding that has historically disrupted the area during severe storms.
