(August 15, 2025) – At a time when most automakers are phasing out the manual transmission, Porsche is doubling down. Speaking with Road & Track during Monterey Car Week 2024, Porsche North America CEO Timo Resch made it clear: the company will keep offering stick shifts “as long as we’re legally allowed to sell them.” The statement comes as Porsche reintroduces a manual option for the 911 Carrera S in the 992.2 generation, a move driven entirely by customer requests.
The manual transmission has been on a steady decline across the industry, with emissions regulations, electrification, and declining demand pushing it toward extinction. Yet Porsche has consistently bucked the trend. Last year, the only manual 911s were the Carrera T and GT3 variants. Now, the Carrera S joins that list, filling a gap for enthusiasts who want something between the sharp-edged GT3 and the more accessible T.
Resch revealed that the manual Carrera S was not part of the original plan for the 992.2 generation. “Our customers have a close relationship with their Porsche centers,” he said. “If they tell them, ‘I would like to have a manual which sits between a GT3 and a T,’ we try to collect all that feedback. Based on the history of the previous generation Carrera S having a manual, we built a case.” The strong demand from North American buyers made the business case easy to justify.
