Brooklyn street brawl

A routine morning in East New York turned into a scene of shocking violence Thursday when a car crash spiraled into a street brawl that left one man with his eye gouged out and another stabbed in the abdomen, according to police and witnesses.

The chaos erupted around 11 a.m. on April 2025 near the intersection of Shepherd and New Lots Avenues. A 47-year-old man driving a sedan plowed into a 46-year-old pedestrian, triggering a confrontation that quickly turned deadly.

“It was like something out of a movie,” said George Ylitalo, 35, a resident who stepped outside to smoke a cigarette. “I heard tires screeching, then saw two men running up the street. One was bleeding so much it looked fake.”

According to law enforcement sources, the older driver exited his vehicle after the crash and stabbed the pedestrian in the stomach with a knife recovered at the scene. The wounded man, despite his injury, chased the driver down the block, determined to fight back.

The chase stretched three blocks before the driver tried to hide behind a parked car. But the stabbing victim vaulted onto the vehicle and tackled him to the ground, witnesses said.

“The guy on the ground grabbed a traffic cone to defend himself, but the other dodged it and got on top of him,” Ylitalo recounted. “He was wailing on him. Then I heard a scream—not like ‘ow, my face.’ It was a man losing his eye. I’ll never forget that sound.”

Police sources confirmed that the stabbing victim gouged out the driver’s right eye during the beating. The eyeball was later found lying on the sidewalk. An officer covered it with a hat to prevent bystanders from taking photos.

After the attack, the stabbing victim stood up, took a few steps, and collapsed between two cars, losing consciousness from blood loss. Ylitalo applied pressure to the wound while his friend called 911. Onlookers filmed the scene with their phones.

Paramedics arrived and transported both men to Brookdale University Hospital, where they are listed in stable condition. Charges against both individuals are pending, police said.

Exclusive development: Court records reviewed by the Daily News show that the two men had a prior history of disputes. Neighbors reported hearing loud arguments from the driver’s apartment in recent weeks, though police have not confirmed a direct link. A source familiar with the investigation said authorities are exploring whether the crash was intentional.

“This wasn’t a random road rage incident,” said criminal justice expert Dr. Linda Morales, a professor at John Jay College. “The level of violence—especially the eye gouging—suggests extreme personal animosity. These kinds of retaliatory acts are rare even in gang-related assaults.”

The case has sparked debate about street violence in Brooklyn. Local community leaders called for increased police patrols and conflict mediation programs.

“We have to ask why two grown men ended up in a fight that left one blind in one eye,” said Council Member Charles Barron, who represents the area. “This is a tragedy that could have been prevented.”

As of late Thursday, neither man had been charged. The driver’s name has not been released pending notification of family. The stabbing victim remains under police guard at the hospital.

Ylitalo, still shaken, said he’s struggled to process what he witnessed. “I came outside for a cigarette and ended up trying to save a guy’s life. It’s not what I expected today.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to call NYPD Crime Stoppers at 1-800-577-TIPS.
