April 10, 2025 – Audi is closing in on a game-changing entry-level electric vehicle that could finally put a premium badge within reach of mainstream buyers. The Audi A2 e-tron, a compact electric SUV slated for a European launch this November, is shaping up to be the brand’s most efficient model ever — and potentially its cheapest EV on sale. While official US timing remains unconfirmed, the A2 e-tron’s specs already signal a strong contender in the crowded small EV segment.
The A2 e-tron’s standout feature is its aerodynamic efficiency. Audi claims a drag coefficient of just 0.24 Cd — among the lowest for any production SUV — which cuts energy consumption by 0.9 kWh/100km compared to a less slippery shape. That helps the 61 kWh battery deliver a preliminary WLTP range of up to 476 km (296 miles). For context, that beats the Tesla Model Y Standard Range (260 miles EPA) and rivals the Chevrolet Equinox EV in efficiency, though EPA numbers will likely differ.
Three power levels will be offered, all driven by a single electric motor on the front axle. The entry version produces 140 kW (188 hp), while mid- and high-spec variants deliver 170 kW (228 hp) with 350 Nm of torque and 240 kW (322 hp) with 545 Nm respectively. The top-tier model should offer lively acceleration, though Audi has not yet released 0-60 mph times.
DC fast charging tops out at 105 kW, which Audi says can replenish the battery from 10% to 80% in just 26 minutes — competitive for this segment. The A2 e-tron also supports bidirectional charging (V2L and V2H), meaning owners can power small appliances or even feed energy back into a home during outages. That feature is still rare in affordable EVs and adds real-world utility.
As of now, Audi has not confirmed a North American launch. The European debut in November 2025 suggests any US introduction would likely follow in late 2026 or 2027, due to shipping logistics and local certification. However, the A2 e-tron’s pricing could be the real draw. Based on European positioning (expected to start around €35,000, or roughly $38,000 at current exchange), it would undercut the Audi Q4 e-tron by several thousand dollars and slot below the Tesla Model Y and Hyundai Ioniq 5 in starting price. That would make it the most affordable Audi EV in the US by a significant margin.
Yet challenges remain. Import duties from Audi’s European factories (most likely Germany or Hungary) could push the US price higher, potentially neutralizing the value advantage. Audi’s local arm has not commented on interest or timing, but the growing appetite for compact, efficient EVs — led by models like the Volvo EX30 and upcoming Chevrolet Bolt — makes a strong business case for bringing the A2 e-tron stateside.
In the sub-$40k electric SUV segment, efficiency and range are critical. The A2 e-tron’s 296-mile WLTP range (expect around 260-270 miles EPA) would top the Volvo EX30 (275 miles WLTP) and match the Kia EV3 (which has not yet launched in the US). Its 0.24 Cd also beats the Tesla Model 3 (0.23 Cd, but as a sedan) and the Lucid Air (0.197 Cd, but far more expensive). For an SUV shape, that aerodynamic accomplishment is notable.
If Audi can keep the entry price near $38,000 and offer the full suite of driver assistance and infotainment features, the A2 e-tron could redefine what buyers expect from a “budget luxury” EV. The biggest unknown: will Audi prioritize US volume or focus on European demand first? Given the brand’s aggressive electrification targets, a transatlantic rollout seems only a matter of time.
The Audi A2 e-tron is not just another small EV — it’s a statement that affordability and efficiency can coexist with premium branding. With best-in-class drag, respectable range, and bidirectional charging, it sets a fresh benchmark for the sub-$40k electric crossover segment. US buyers will have to wait a bit longer, but the wait may well be worth it.
