Aiken County, SC – February 20, 2025 – A 24-year-old man is dead following a single-vehicle crash that occurred Wednesday night in Aiken County, according to the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. The incident marks the county’s third traffic-related fatality this month.
The crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on February 19 on Wire Road near the intersection with Old Wire Road, a rural stretch known for sharp curves and limited lighting. Deputies responded to reports of a vehicle off the roadway. Upon arrival, they found a white 2018 Ford F-150 that had struck a tree. The driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not been released pending notification of next of kin.
“Our thoughts are with the family and friends of the victim during this difficult time,” said Sergeant Mike Thompson, public information officer for the Aiken County Sheriff’s Office. “We are working diligently to determine all factors that contributed to this tragedy.”
Preliminary investigation suggests that speed may have been a factor. The road conditions at the time of the crash were dry, and weather was clear. The Aiken County Coroner’s Office will conduct an autopsy to confirm the cause of death and any contributing factors, such as alcohol or drug impairment.
Single-vehicle crashes remain a significant public safety concern in South Carolina. According to the South Carolina Department of Public Safety, in 2024 alone, there were over 18,000 single-vehicle crashes statewide, resulting in 342 deaths. That accounts for nearly 40% of all traffic fatalities. Speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving are the leading causes.
Local residents have long complained about safety on Wire Road. “It’s a dangerous stretch, especially at night,” said Martha Lee, who lives nearby. “We’ve been asking the county to add better lighting and rumble strips for years.” The Aiken County Council has previously discussed road improvements for the area, but no timeline has been set.
The Aiken County Sheriff’s Office urges anyone with information regarding the crash to contact the department at (803) 642-1745.
This tragic incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safe driving, especially on rural roads. Law enforcement encourages motorists to obey speed limits, avoid distractions, and never drive under the influence. The investigation is ongoing, and further details will be released as they become available.
