WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR KC Harvey Environmental is seeking a Field GIS Technician to join our team in Rawlins, WY. This position supports both our consulting and field services operations across the western United States, focusing on weed control, vegetation management, and stormwater compliance projects. This role will be approximately 50% field-based and 50% office-based, providing GIS and data support to field crews, project managers, and environmental scientists. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, enjoys problem-solving, and is comfortable working with both spatial/tabular data and hands-on environmental field operations. Projects and duties include: GIS & Data Management (Office – 50%) • Create, edit, and maintain GIS datasets related to weed control, stormwater BMPs, and reclamation monitoring. • Generate professional maps and field data collection tools to support project planning, treatment tracking, and invoicing. • Compile summary data for reporting, billing, and compliance deliverables. • Support field operations through GPS data management, QA/QC of collected data, and daily data uploads. • Assist in generating client deliverables, including maps, data summaries, and treatment reports. • Support invoicing and cost-tracking processes through data validation and mapping of work completed. Field Work (50%) • Assist field crews with GPS/GIS data collection for herbicide applications, BMP installations, and site inspections. • Conduct site mapping, photo documentation, and post-treatment verification. • Perform limited field data collection using mobile applications (e.g., ArcGIS Field Maps, Survey123). • Communicate with project managers and field staff to ensure accurate and timely reporting of work performed WHAT YOU’LL NEED Applicants must be: • Currently pursuing or holding a bachelor’s degree in Environmental science, Land Resources, Earth Science, Geology, or GIS. • Working knowledge of GIS principles, spatial data management, and cartographic design. • Coursework or professional experience using ESRI ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and Field Maps. • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Word for data analysis and reporting. • Familiarity with field data collection methods, GPS devices, and mobile GIS applications. • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in both field and office environments. • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel regionally as project needs require. WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR We are seeking motivated current students and recent graduates to fill eight seasonal Reclamation Monitoring Field Technician positions for the summer of 2025. These positions are based out of Rawlins, Wyoming and run full-time from May through August, with the potential for extension depending on project needs. Technicians will gain hands-on experience in vegetation identification, ecological monitoring methods, and data collection, while also developing a practical understanding of reclamation practices and the challenges of restoring high desert and sagebrush steppe ecosystems. POSITION DESCRIPTION Monitoring Field Technicians are responsible for collecting data to evaluate the progress of reclamation and document site conditions on lands disturbed by oil and gas development in high desert and sagebrush steppe ecosystems in south-central Wyoming. The position is fast-paced and physically demanding, with crews completing reclamation monitoring and stormwater inspections at 20–30 locations daily. The typical workweek runs Monday through Friday, 8–12 hours per day including drive time from the office to remote field sites. Reclamation monitoring tasks include documenting plant species within reclaimed areas and adjacent undisturbed reference sites, estimating vegetation cover through visual assessments and point-intercept transects, photographing and mapping bare ground and erosion features, and identifying infestations of invasive or noxious weeds. Stormwater inspections involve assessing erosion risks, evaluating the effectiveness of stormwater management structures and best management practices, and documenting maintenance needs. The work requires extensive travel on unpaved and rough roads by four-wheel-drive vehicle, as well as on foot over uneven and sometimes rugged terrain. Technicians should expect to walk up to five miles per day in hot, cold, windy, and occasionally wet conditions. Successful applicants will have experience and be willing to develop further skills in vegetation identification, ecological monitoring protocols, GPS navigation, and mobile data collection. Strong attention to detail, the ability to follow standardized procedures, and a commitment to safety in remote environments are essential. Training will be provided in monitoring methods, stormwater inspection requirements, and data management. Duties Include: · Conducting reclamation monitoring and stormwater inspections following standardized and site-specific protocols. · Accurately completing vegetation assessments, stormwater inspections, and additional required forms using a tablet. · Maintaining accurate logs to ensure accurate tracking of project completion. · Navigating with and mapping features using ArcGIS Field Maps. · Willingness to assist in other projects as needed (weed control, stormwater maintenance, soil sampling, etc.) WHAT YOU’LL NEED Applicants must have: • Minimum of two years of undergraduate coursework completed; majors or degrees in natural resource–related fields (e.g., environmental science, biology, botany, rangeland management, ecology, or related discipline) • Field experience or coursework in western plant identification including grasses • Familiarity with the major plant families, and flora common to high desert and sagebrush steppe ecosystems • Field experience or coursework in western plant identification including grasses • A commitment to High Standards in Safety. • A positive attitude and ability to work well as part of a team. • Ability to participate in pre-employment drug and alcohol testing. • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions. • Experience following established field protocols to conduct sampling and field data collection • Experience with data entry and management using electronic devices • Experience driving 4WD trucks, especially on rough and unmaintained roads.
