Taken by\r\n\nAmancio D'Silva's wife, Joyce, it recalls for him the long voyage which\r\n\ncarried him from his native Goa to this country five years ago — a protégé\r\n\nof the regal Maharanee of Jaipur, setting out to carve a musician's\r\n\ncareer for himself in the Western World. And the mental images of the\r\n\nlife he left behind, of another world of culture and music, is reflected in\r\n\nthe sometimes strangely haunting cadences of his guitar playing and in\r\n\nthe orientation of his own compositions\r\n\nFor his music is a compound of three different influences, blended\r\n\ninto a whole which is at once invigorating, haunting and nostalgic\r\n\nThe Indian influence is unmistakeable in pieces like What Maria Sees and\r\n\nJoyce Country — his own compositions. He took up guitar in his teens, influenced by American jazz guitarists such as Charlie Christian and Wes Montgomery whom he heard on the radio, and soon began performing with local jazz groups. By his early 20s he had formed his own group, including saxophonist Braz Gonzalvez and pianist Anacleto Naronha, and toured around India. He met his future wife Joyce, an Irish-born teacher, in Simla. He gained such a reputation as a musician that Gayatri Devi, the Maharani of Jaipur at the time and an ardent jazz lover, became his benefactor and bought him his first quality guitar, a Gibson.\r\n\n\r\n\nIn 1967, he travelled to London with his family, primarily to seek medical treatment for his son Stephano. Sometimes it's difficult for even their closest associates to tell whether the person is \"in\" or \"out\" at any particular moment. But to a great extent the devious dual personality is not true of musicians. And certainly not true in the case of my friend, Grady Martin. Grady, in personality and performance, is one of the most direct people I know.\r\n\nThat's the whole appeal of the man. That's why he's liked by those he works with, and why his music's liked by everybody who's ever happened onto what he puts out on records.\r\n\nThat is not to say, however, that Grady's ability or taste: confine him to \"playing it straight.\" Far from it. He's more inventive and resourceful than at least 99.9% of all the owners of guitar picks in the entire universe today. You see, he has to be nothing less than that to have served as lead musician on the records of 100 different singers in the past two or three years alone. Without question, Grady is the most-in-demand man in Nashville. And when I say his performance is direct, I'm simply pointing up the fact that there is a startling difference between being a musician and a magician. Magicians are full of trickery, and sleight of hand is too often presented as a substitute for real musicianship.\r\n\nThe lives of three of us — Grady and myself and an incomparable talent named Red Foley — have been entwined for 15 years. Grady headed Red's band on personal appearances, radio, television and records for eight years, until recording activity here boomed so big that Grady scarcely had time to grab a sandwich and a shave in between a 'round-the-clock schedule of sessions. I don't need to seek Red's permission to quote him as feeling just as I do about Grady; the words he'd use to express himself might be different, but his opinion on the subject is every bit as strong as mine. And Brenda — well, suffice to say that if Grady weren't there when she arrived at the studio, you could count on a postponement, for five minutes or five weeks, until he came in and sat down in the leader's chair.\r\n\nIf you get the idea from what I've said that this is a pretty special type of person around our town, my selling job is done. But Decca didn't really need me or anyone else to act as a salesman. During a nearly 50-year career, Martin backed many performers, among them, Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Buddy Holly, Johnny Burnette, Don Woody and Arlo Guthrie, Johnny Cash, Patsy Cline and Bing Crosby. He is a member of the Rockabilly Hall of Fame and was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in March 2015.\r\n\n\r\n\nGrady Martin was born in Chapel Hill, Tennessee, United States. He grew up on a farm with his oldest sister, Lois, his older brothers, June and Bill, and his parents, Claude and Bessey; His mother played the piano and encouraged his musical talent.\r\n\n\r\n\nAt age 15, Martin was invited to perform regularly on WLAC-AM in Nashville, Tennessee and made his recording debut two years later on February 15, 1946 with Curly Fox and Texas Ruby in Chicago, Illinois. \r\n\n\r\n\nThat same year, he joined Paul Howard's Western swing-oriented Arkansas Cotton Pickers as half of Howard's twin guitar ensemble with Robert \"Jabbo\" Arrington and performed at the Grand Ole Opry. When Howard left, Opry newcomer Little Jimmy Dickens hired several former Cotton Pickers, including Martin, as his original Country Boys road band. He later joined Big Jeff Bess and the Radio Playboys followed by a stint with the Bailes Brothers Band.\r\n\n\r\n\nBy 1950, Martin was a part of the rising Nashville recording scene as a studio guitarist and fiddler, and his guitar hooks propelled Red Foley's \"Chattanoogie Shoe Shine Boy\" and \"Birmingham Bounce\".[3] In 1951, he signed with Decca Records with his own country-jazz band, Grady Martin and the Slew Foot Five. In addition to backing mainstream acts like Bing Crosby and Burl Ives, they began to record in their own right, with later sessions under the name Grady Martin and his Winging Strings when he introduced his twin-neck Bigsby guitar. I feel like calling up my\r\n\nold man and playing it over the telephone, just to\r\n\nneedle him.\r\n\nErskine Hawkins was born in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1914, and when he was twenty-one and\r\n\nattending Alabama State Teachers College, he\r\n\nstarted a band called The 'Bama State Collegians.\r\n\nI wish I had heard that one. I did hear the one he\r\n\nhad about four years later when he came to New\r\n\nYork and began jobbing in the big Harlem ballrooms. It was a fine, swinging band, with an ability\r\n\nto snarl out rich dark tones and send high-pitched\r\n\nbrasses screaming against them in an utterly irresistible manner. People had to dance to it, I noticed; I didn't dance, I just stood and marveled. It was. that good. It was especially good when the boys took one number and played it, as they sometimes did, for nearly a half-hour. When that happened, the whole auditorium seemed to sway. Some of the best numbers the band played in those days are on this LP: Tuxedo is here, of course, and Tippin' In, Blackout, Bear Mash Blues and the rest. The vocals are by Jimmy Mitchelle, Laura Washington and Dolores Brown. This is an LP that takes me back, but strangely enough it sounds a good deal more modern, and certainly more swinging, than much of the big-band stuff we're hearing today. Most of the others are much simpler to categorize. In Webster's case he spans a lengthy period — \r\n\nhe has been a professional for upwards of a quarter of a century! — but only in the bigness of his tone and the\r\n\nvigor of his style does he seem a part of an earlier era. Actually, Ben Webster has earned the respect of every jazz\r\n\nfollower of whatever cult — and this, in an era of splinter groups for every new sound and technique, is more\r\n\nthan a moderate achievement.\r\n\nThe key to all of this, of course, is a surpassing degree of sheer musicianship.
